The Power of HJ’s Visualizations
If you were like me, who had to pause, replay Viki’s IG episodes not once but twice because I wasn’t too sure it was Hyun Joong I am watching, then I am happy I wasn’t alone.
His talking, emoting, and facial expressions were so different from what I am familiar with. Even his body language when fighting gave a whole new meaning to the expression “rolling with the punches”. Even his kicks were noticed by his cast mates and had nothing else to say but praises on how fast he learns and execute the martial arts skills.

Because it felt like I was in a different terrain, I suddenly had the urge to watch his other videos. From his early SS501 days to recent activities. What happened to the old Kim Hyun Joong -where did he go?
Almost everybody were impressed by his improvements in the acting field. Can somebody explain what happened? Who could better explain but Kim Hyun Joong himself when media in a recent interview asked how he prepared for his IG scenes. His reply : by visualization.
Self improvement gurus explain visualization as creating mental images on what one wants to achieve. To make them as vivid and real as if it is already happening complete with sounds, colors, movements, the smell, touch. Noooo, it is not going crazy, it’s creativity!
It takes practice, practice and more practice. Hyun Joong even knows how to empty his mind the night before a (concert) performance and not to be distracted by television or other sound systems in his bedroom.
I recall when he was interviewed during Boys Over Flowers phenomenon and was asked how he transformed into a flower boy he said he tells himself before going to sleep ” I am a flower, I am a flower”. Everyone laughed. Joking or not who knows if he had really talked himself into that transformation (he used to be called tough guy early on ). Success right there; it was so effective it took him a long while to cast away that flower boy image.
If you think it is all the result of controlling thought processes towards a goal, that is only half of the picture. It must involve the body as well. He did all possible physical changes from the haircut to the abs, to the tone of the voice, to the body language -all accompanied his mind to produce the desired end. And don’t forget his determination which he clearly articulated many, many times- “I want to show my manly image’. In other words there was the long time and the short time process involved in what we saw at Inspiring Generation. Even Baek Mir of City Conquest pales in comparison to Shin Jung Te.
He has breathe life into Shin Jung Tae that sometimes we tend to think, or confuse the man from the character. In a way, he is revealing more of the real Hyun Joong through him. He fights, he learns, then fight, never say give up with failures even with wounds and scars, to go on try harder, to finally win.It is said for characterization to be believable and lifelike is to bring it out from within. The outcome: his acting breakthrough in Inspiring Generation drama.
Do I have to spell out what happened to his solo singing career, too?
Anybody trying KHJ’s kind of visualization?
