Kim Hyun Joong turns 28 today (29 by “Korean birthday” calculations), and after nine years in the Korean entertainment industry, he still manages to amaze his fans. Here are eight times we swooned for the hunky star.
On June 8, 2005, Kim Hyun Joong made his official debut as the leader of K-Pop boy band SS501. Although the group has not had a release since 2010, they have not disbanded, and instead the members are focusing on their solo careers for the time being. Fans of SS501 and Kim Hyun Joong still have their fingers crossed that this means the group with make a full-scale comeback. Perhaps next year for their tenth anniversary?

Kim Hyun Joong has a lifetime best friend in JYJ singer Kim Jaejoong. The friendship begans when the two were kicking off their careers and actually lived together for about a year. In a 2012 broadcast of MBC’s K-Pop Stars Take Over the World, Hyun Joong explained that Jaejoong has always been a supportive friend. “When I was having a hard time Jae Joong once left a letter next to my pillow,” Kim Hyun Joong said. “It told me not to drink too much and instead to talk it out. I still have that letter.”

Over 70,000 pre-orders were made for the album and after its release, Break Down jumped to number on the GaOn albums chart, as well as becoming the best-selling album of the month and one of the highest-grossing K-Pop releases of the year with well over 100,000 copies sold in Korea alone.

“Unbreakable” comes off Hyun Joong’s third solo mini-album Round 3 and was released in July 2013. Anyone who hasn’t already seen the music video featuring Jay Park is missing out. “Unbreakable” is K-Pop idol eye candy at its finest.
“Cappuccino” and other Japanese singles
After going solo in 2011, Kim Hyun Joong began promoting in Japan. He signed a deal with Universal Music Japan for his Japan-based music activities and has released a steady stream of singles in the country ever since. Last summer’s “Cappuccino” is a particularly fun and playful song that shows off the singer’s naturally charming personality.
‘Best Couple Award’ with Hwangbo
Back in 2008, Kim Hyun Joong appeared on We Got Married alongside his fictitous celebrity bride Hwangbo, who is six years his senior. His relationship with the member of former girl group Chakra stole the hearts of fans who deemed them the “lettuce couple” and earned the two MBC’s Best Couple Award that year.

Hyun Joong has made a name for himself as not just a celebrity, but also as a philanthropist. The star has repeatedly donated large amounts of his money to charitable causes around the world. In addition to regularly giving to organizations like the Red Cross, he also set up a scholarship fund in 2012 and has worked on issues ranging from senior citizen aid to natural disaster relief. What a nice guy!
