Inspiring Generation is set during the 1930s and takes place across Korea, China and Japan. The show follows trials and tribulations of lead character Shin Jung-Tae as he struggles to look after his ailing sister at the age of 15 without any parents to support him. Quick to temper Jung-Tae gets into many fights and predicaments on his journey into becoming a man. Along the way he meets Gaya Teguchi, played by Lim Soo-Hyang, a young smuggler with a mysterious past that she's completely unaware of. Inspiring Generation starts off frantically and that may confuse some if your not paying attention (like I wasn't) but slows down in parts to allow you to gather your thoughts.
The action is fantastic and varied. Ranging from great hand to hand street fighting, sword and dagger duels to leaping on and off moving trains. The level of martial arts and quality of the stunts and choreography has to commended. There is a lot of fighting in the show similar to old fashioned martial arts movieswhich is both refreshing and nostalgic at the same time.
Something the show does better than most is evoking strong emotions either sympathy for the tough lives led by the young characters. There's a constant struggle to get by as well as the classic struggles of love and faith endured by young and old alike. What really gives the show emotional resonance is the soundtrack which is one of the best I’ve heard in any television show. From melancholic piano solos to upbeat dance/pop punctuate the storyline and actions as they unfold.
The acting all-round is very good particular for the lead characters. In typical Asian Drama style some are a little goofier than other and as a consequence may come across a little simple. Though it may seem like some of this is bad acting its important to accept that this is just a character style or trait and once you get used to it actually becomes quite endearing.
There are so many things I like about this show. I'm certain it has a relatively large budget,which is small change by western standards. This has certainly been put to good use resulting in the production of a convincing 1930s Asia filled with believable sets and characters.
The show only a few episodes along and so far I've really enjoyed it. My only concern is the show may become a little too melodramatic or romantic. In truth the amount of action, adventure and intrigue will most likely balance any additional romance. Time will tell if this is a great show or a good show but it has me hooked and i'm confident the cast and staff will maintain the quality throughtout.
I highly reccomend this show even if your not familiar with Asian or Korean television. For those of you willing to give this show a show chance you can watch it if your TV service has the KDS or KBS World channel or over at Viki.com for free. The subtitles are done by the Viki community so may not be 100% accurate but from what I’ve seen have been good so far. Try to watch at least one full episode and see what you think.
