[hyunnies Pexers article - 25.01.14] This Dancer Is A Fighter

That handsome face with an aura of gentleness is deceiving. Don’t mess with him. Don’t think he is only bad when he is frowning, his face darkened with anger and body tensed for action. He doesn’t need bodyguards or anyone to do his bidding. He turns into a DEADLY ONE MAN DEMOLITION MACHINE when provoked enough. His enemies or those he deem need to feel his wrath, better see it coming.
His strides are not heavy -they are full of confidence as if justice is now about to be meted. Anyone blocking his path must have a death wish on their hearts. He is ready to grant their wish.

His blows were on target-blood flows with vengeance. Faces twisted with pain shrink away. Bodies slumped on the floor like ragdolls. Our nonchalant fighter just glided along. He doesn’t even turn around to ask, anybody else?

Glasses from broken doors are shattered -he doesn’t need to knock -he breaks in with his forceful gloved hands or maybe a kick will do.

Cut!

Kim Hyun Joong just delivered a less than 2 minutes of ending scene of episode 4.

Of course he can’t do this kind of scene without other actors who know their craft of staged fighting. Many of them veterans of stunts who used to double for actors. Actors nowadays prefer doing their own stunts. A choreographer and fight director manage the scene to deliver realism, save time while ensuring the safety of everyone involved. Cameramen, lighting and sound experts add their touches so that we viewers can suspend our judgement. Remember it is a drama not documentary.

Techniques to make the scene realistic complete with gory details are legacies from theater acts. In time, film caught up and articulated the movements with the use of advance technologies.

Being an exercise buff and dancer for many years make Kim Hyun Joong’s body, mind and spirit well prepared for fighting. His flexibility, agility and endurance make him adaptable to the cadence of stage fighting. But not contented with his stock knowledge and practice he still went for action schooling.

The affinity of dancing to fighting has had a long history and tradition in many cultures. We are familiar with war dancing in warrior societies. In post modern societies, on the other hand, dancing like hip hop replaced street fighting.

In sageuks, as in contemporary war movies-fights in battles are as important as scenes in peacetime. The combatants face each other in different milieus without missing a beat.

Going back to our current love,Inspiring Generation, Hyun Joong’s fights are not to be appreciated only in its figurative aspect as what the poster says, but also its literal side.

One talks with the fist and kicks, you know. Oh by the way, Hyun Joong uses his elbows, too. I want to see him headbutt one of these days.

Hyun Joong after Inspiring Generation will never be the same again. You think so, too ?
