It is often said that characters in the major scenes of stories, in this case drama always have problems to solve. Many times these tensions in their lives were from their personal experiences. As they grapple to find the solution to their problems the character might even find complications.
At the Inspiring Generation’s opening scene we saw Gaya talking in cryptic words. But our attention was grabbed fast by the betted fighting about to start between two gladiators using their fists and bodies. The crowd lusted for action to get their money’s worth. The showoff fighter growled while the Shin Jung Tae in street clothes steadied himself. The fight was violent and rough. Jung Tae grimaces in pain, as his veins in the neck almost popped out as he received the blows. Sprawled on his back he is attacked furiously but managed to use desperate moves to get back at his opponent. He momentarily won raising his own hands when everybody else were busy giving the countdown. He didn’t notice that traitorous blow ended what could have been his victory.
In spite of giving his all to parry his attacker’s blow he loss the bout. Jung Tae looked dejected and at the same time with indifference in that dark corner where he asked to be comforted by an additional1,000 won. He is being groomed for more fights in the future. Pocketing the money he quickly turned his back from the promoter. He later seemed to drown his unspeakable sorrow in liquor when his opponent found him and taunted him even more. A move he would regret(if he lives) when Jung Tae delivered his deadly blow. A man who was watching the fight earlier appeared to tell him to go to Shanghai.
We saw next Jung Tae board the boat headed for Shanghai. As he stare into the horizon of his new destined place his face somewhat hopeful contemplated a brighter side might in his life soon come. But before the future comes we are brought back to the past where it all started.
Jung Tae was a teenager already working as a rickshaw runner or driver pulling passengers. He was happy he could get passengers and saved his earnings for his sister Chung Ah’s operation. Jung Tae was not hesitant to use his fists and fighting skills as they are his only weapon to protect himself, his friend and beaten women. Or to right the wrongs committed by the thugs. It makes us wonder where the law enforcement people went during those times.
His friend Jjang Dol whom he always defend and save from adversities, young Dokuchi Gaya and Ok Ryeon are introduced to us, as well as their early relationships.
But young Jung Tae’s fate was turned upside down when smuggling came into his life and took the money he had been saving for his sister’s treatment. He confronted a powerful gang responsible for his loss. Slumped and bloodied on the feet of the gangster who beat him up, he bitterly recalled how he earned every cent of that money.
